The history of candles in Aizu is said to have started about 500 years ago when Ashina Morinobu, the lord of the time, encouraged the planting of lacquer trees in the Houtoku period.
Since then, lacquerware and candles have become a traditional and proud
industry in Aizu, as the sap of the lacquer tree became lacquer paint and
the wax was extracted from its seeds. |

【Aizu Pictured Candle】
- The history of candles in Aizu is said to have started about 500 years ago when Ashina Morinobu, the lord of the time, encouraged the planting of lacquer trees in the Houtoku period.
Since then, lacquerware and candles have become a traditional and proud industry in Aizu, as the sap of the lacquer tree became lacquer paint and the wax was extracted from its seeds.
- In the Tensho era, Gamo Ujisato moved to this area and brought in technicians from Omi with superior skills, which further improved the quality of the product.
In the Edo period (1603-1868), the Matsudaira clan, the feudal lord of the feudal domain, made use of the financial resources to produce candles throughout Japan, and the quality of Aizu candles became known to the public.
- In order to increase sales, pictorial candles with pictures on them were invented and used by the feudal lords, shrines and temples of the time, as well as by high society.
Especially, a pair of picture candles are lit at wedding ceremonies, and it is said that this is the origin of the word "flower arrangement".
Also, in winter in Aizu, where there are no flowers, people began to display
picture candles instead of flowers on the Buddhist altar.
【good omen Nanten and Fukujuso】
- In Yamagata-ya Main shop, there is a traditional pattern called "Nanten
Fukuju", which is a good luck charm. The work includes episodes like
this one dating back to the Edo period.
- During the Edo period, the shogun of the time, Prince Tsunayoshi Tokugawa,
was born weak and had many difficult problems. The Aizu clan sent a candle
depicting "Nanten and Fukujuso" to Tsunayoshi as a thoughtful
offering, with the intention of "turning a difficulty into a blessing".
Lord Tsunayoshi was very pleased with this thoughtfulness.

- One of the successive feudal lords of Aizu is the Ashina clan.
In the Edo period, Gamo Ujisato and Hoshina Masayuki are prominent.

- The size is expressed in cm as the height and diameter (φ) of the thickest part of the core.
